Marv Sunderland was a fast athlete at Chester High School before moving on to Northern Montana College in 1962-1965 as a running back. Sunderland was athletic enough to try out with the New Orleans Saints 1967 and the Calgary Stampeders 1968. Marv started his coaching career in Chinook, MT, in 1968, moved on to Hardin High School in 1969.

His collegiate coaching career began at North Dakota State from 1970 to 1975. After coaching, Marv became a premiere NFL scout for 39 YEARS with the Jets, Patriots, and Tennessee Titans. From 1998 to 2002, Marv was with the New York Giants, where he was director of player personnel in charge of college and professional scouting while being a leader on the 2000 Giants Super Bowl Championship team.
